Mick Aston - RIP

close

News seems to be breaking everywhere on the internet that Mick Aston died today aged 66. I would like to pay my respects - as am sure others will too.

Rest in peace Mick. Sad news

First time (and only time) I met Mick was on a "rescue dig" Open Day in West Devon in 1989 when a valley was about to be drowned by the subsequently called Roadford Reservoir. He subsequently appeared in an edition of "Time Signs" covering the story of the excavation. All these years on and Mick had the same persona of an unassuming, modest man of great experience. He clearly acquired his knowledge from a very young age because I only ever remember the man as a sage!
The world (never mind archaeology) will be a poorer place for his untimely passing

Sad news indeed. Will be greatly missed by all.

To me he was one of the three main TimeTeam people..along with Tony and Phil. Sad to see him go so early RIP Mr stripey jumper.

Bum.

Good on yer Mick, for services to popular archaeology. And for apparently being a thoroughly decent chap.

No doubt manufacturers of dodgy stripey jumpers will be raising a glass in rememberance, too.

If only there were more people like him on telly. I never met him, but I suspect if I had I'd be making a comment like "If only there were more people like him in life."

I'll miss his friendly personality, his humour, his intelligence, the way he came across as an expert without being arrogant, and lastly, but not least, by the way he made archaeology nice. By nice I mean just that. How many people who previously viewed archaeology as boring, out-of-reach and dusty were turned around by his special way of coming across, and his sense of fun.

They broke the mould when they made Mick.
RIP,
TE.
