In the case of rock art the majority including the most imporatnt finds have been by amateurs , the exception being when pros have had priveleged access e.g. Newgrange or found as part of a dig .
Pros have a problem and that is they are inundated with punters finding new stone circles etc. that are patently figments of the imagination plus there is an element of "how can you know more than me ," I have a bit of paper ....etc " Although the higher up the food chain the less likely you are to encounter that .There may well be an element of arrogance covering ignorance at local level however .
