At least their 'treaure-seeking' was explicit. Seen from their point of view it was difficult to understand why the archaeologist's search for context took place in areas rather removed. But on hearing his complaint of not finding anything in these places I believe that he couldn't believe such a rich grave can have been a singleton and was really looking for archaeological 'treasure', an extensive Viking cemetery.
