for big flashy sites you can't beat Kilmartin.
Couldn't disagree with that.
For a book, best intro is Beckensall's British Prehistoric Rock Art. There are many others, like Paulus says, the BRAC list is pretty much spot on, but Stan's one is probably the best for service as a gazetteer, but still with enough info to give a good background.
As Hob says, Beckensall's book is as good a place to start as any, and will give you a look at some of the best sites around the uk, but you already have one of the largest collections of rock art sites in the uk on TMA, as well as the best dedicated rock art site of
BRAC. We all have the sites and areas we favour, some of us like certain things within each site, or appreciate different types of carvings. Some of us have a passion for the carvings in the places we live...Galloway is my place, i have a passion for the place, the carvings, Pebbles,Hob & others have a passion for Northumberland, others have Yorkshire, Argyll, Stirlingshire & Perthshire, and of course the wonders that are Ireland.
Look for sites close to where you live, you should be able to find a book dedicated to that area, ask questions, visit the sites and enjoy.
You will find many good and special rock art carvings in all of the places mentioned above, and in time once added to TMA we shall see the similarities between the British rock art and the carvings in Europe.
