I'm kinda half following this as I'm not great with alignments and all that.
It all brings to mind this: http://www.mythicalireland.com/iotss/island-of-the-setting-sun.php that I'm reading at the moment. Thought you folks might be interested.

Thanks Andy , Dunno if it's quite the same thing really , there is a lot of stuff blethered about alignments that when you investigate them they seem to disappear , although the Newgrange light box is one of the few examples we have of a genuine astronomical alignment and it is mainly due to that and the alignments at Nether Largie and Stonehenge that we can be sure that the interest and capability was there in the Neolithic.

I guess you're right, but what struck me was the difficulties you're having with distances between the sites and the curvature of the earth etc. These guys are saying they've witnessed solistical alignments all along the Boyne valley, from Drogheda, to Slane, to Loughcrew (not in the Boyne valley) that seem plausible. I know you're dealing with greater distances, but Loughcrew is roughly about 50kms from Drogheda, with Slane in between, so maybe you need to work out what's of significance between the sites. Or maybe you have already. Or maybe you don't and I'm just raving! :-)
