Small point of info Goff - the great majority of MDers don't seem prepared to accept the Code of Practice and are carrying on as before - in fact they wrote their own rival Code in retaliation which basically says Sod Society though it still talks about responsibility - enough to wave quickly under the nose of the next unsuspecting farmer they target.

Even the most uncaring geocacher can't be compared with them. Only if geocachers took bits of the monuments home with them could they be said to be acting in a comparable manner. I might employ a geocacher as my Under Butler. But a detectorist - never!

Aye - was a bit unfair of me to compare the two groups! I just used the MDers as an example because of the suggestion of self-governance... The ones that don't adhere to the code are obviously just greedy and selfish. But you know that and I won't go into all that again... ;o)

This is pretty much what I'm getting at - and I'm sure the MDing issue started off the same way (only to discover that some of them were willingly destroying archaeology as mentioned briefly above!) where it was thought that education in these matters was better than just having a go at them. It could be that they don't realise they are causing damage, and a simple pointer in the right direction could put them right.

I'm not a geocacher, by the way! Just trying to see it from all sides...

Even I (!) might have to agree with you there, Nigel

And, MDers are generally in it for personal / financial gain, which no-one could EVER say geocachers are guilty of, considering the quarry.
