Interesting that about the grouse over there. I believe that it's the sheep farmers here, doing the same encouraging of new growth thing. It was quite surreal driving up there and seeing half a hill on fire, right next to a pine plantation.

Burning of open land has become a very talked about subject in Cornwall over the last year or so. I think I am right in saying that landowners are now not allowed to burn heather, gorse, bracken etc becuase it can result in the distruction of other plants and habitat. The result of this is that if you go up on the moors from June onwards you can see nothing but bracken. Archeological remians are getting swamped by the growth and I am sure if it goes on damage will be done. Farmers are not happy, walkers are not happy...DEFRA officers stick thier heads in the sand...
