Hmm, I learned to smoke in a park in Liverpool - good place to begin bad habit. I know the Holy Well, or rather what is passed as the Holy Well nowadays. I had put a wooden peg at the place where the original well was shown on the very old O.S. This is by the roadside opposite Croft Cottage, on Barrow Bridge Road. The peg is gone now - drain work - but I suppose I could put another one there. A new photograph of the wellhead wouldn't go amiss either. The ground levels have changed in many places around there, due to the bleachworks. I remember the ponds unused and full of frogs. The reservoir below Toothill has some big fish. There was a proposal to drain it that was luckily shelved. I think the free festival that was held in Moss Bank Park would have been much better on the St. Paul's playing fields - but we didn't know about the place then. And - watch out - there's a Full Moon coming. 'In Cancer too', so it'll be a strong one (to the bunker).

how did you discover it as a barrow - i mean that could be a major discovery no? i haven't been for ages but I remembered it as being really quite big - i didn't know it was called that either - the etymology would certainly give it provenance - what a lovely thought...

oh and ps - alan garner seems to have a similar understanding of a very specific locale as you - alderley edge of course but ''thursbitch' is about the psychic history of one valley - i think the etymology of that means 'valley of the demon' or something - and 'red shift' centres on mow cop - an iron age fort - 'the owl service' on another valley in west wales - and a particular holed stone. i remember there being a stone circle on alderley edge although i think it may be modern and tumuli and straight tracks feature in his first two books. and he is descended from stone masons too....
