>>Worse than watching any horror flick for a child, a feckin shrivelled head with tufts of hair springing out of it. I could see that feckin thing every time I closed my eyes for months, no wonder the country is psycho.<<

It didn't do a lot for me when I went for a peek out of curiosity a few years ago <shudder> it certainly would terrify young children, but strange things are considered 'normal' under the label of organised religion. I've never understood why religiously venerated objects often have to be so repulsive.

Can't now remember--would have to check our trip diary--which of the churches it was in Brittany where the local saint's head was kept in a reliquary in the dusty little sanctuary. It took me a few minutes with the French language guide pamphlet to figure out exactly where the sanctuary was, as the door to it was closed and not identified in any way, and Loie and I took a few more minutes finding the reliquary in all the jumble of stuff.

But the interesting thing was that our traveling companions wouldn't go in to see it. They just flatly--though of course politely--refused. It was odd, given that they'd been enthusiastic about everything else we'd dragged them through, even the long night in the smoky pub with Jimit and Pete G. Guess not everyone is into disembodied heads.
