holy wells books

Does anyone know where I can get a copy of Feorag NiBride's booklet The Wells and Springs of Leeds? Failing that, can anyone recommend any books on holy wells, springs and similar things?

Many thanks

Legendary Lore of the Holy Wells of England by Robert Charles Hope
First published in 1893, but facsimile edition published by Llanerch in 2000 ISBN 1 86143 092 2 . It includes some wells in Leeds

Hi Mungo

I'm pretty sure that all copies of it have gone. She only printed a coupla hundred of 'em, but you could contact her via her website to see if she's any old copies left, at:
http://www.antipope.org/feorag/index.html

Alternatively, check out the article by K.J. Bonser - "Spas, Wells & Springs of Leeds" - in the 'Publications of the Thoresby Society, 16:1, 1973, where much of what's in Feorag's booklet can be found in here. You could also try seeking old Edna Whelan's "Yorkshire Holy Wells & Sacred Springs" + her "Magic and Mystery of Holy Wells." Then there's Val Shepherd's "Historic Wells in and Around Bradford," aswell as Rob Wilson's "Holy Wells and Spas of South Yorkshire."

If y' need any more help with any of Yorkshire's wells, send me an email.

...nearly forgot - for a good modern overview on British holy wells, check out James Rattue's "The Living Stream", as well as Janet & Colin Bord's "Sacred Waters."

no, but I bet Goff can :)

Cheers

The Mighty Graeme C has a lovely website devoted to the Holy Wells of Yorkshire http://www.alkelda.f9.co.uk/holywells/index.htm

and there's this, slightly defunct site; http://www.bath.ac.uk/lispring/sourcearchive/front.htm

You can pick up a copy of Val Shepherd's 'Historic Wells in and around Bradford' from Spooks on Haworth main street, if you're in the area. It's just over a fiver. It doesn't jst cover Bradford, but parts of Leeds, Kirklees,Calderdale and North Yorkshire too.

She's also written a booklet called 'Holy Wells of West Yorkshire and the Dales', which you can get for less than a fiver from the same shop in Haworth!
(I should be on commission, eh?!)

Cheers

Dave

Hay on Wye, Britains first and best "Book Town" is a great place to search for bboks.
If you contact The Cinema Book Shop or Booths Books they may be able to do a search for you.
Happy hunting. ;o)

Went to Leeds last week, to Meanwood, to a well(were one was), energy flows from this spot up to the top of the valley into a disused quarry, it re enters into and out at this spot.
A certain Mr Tolkien lived near this spot whilst at Leeds university, I wonder what appeared out of a hole in the ground ?.

Used to love , Mother Shipstons well at Knaresboro, they let You hang items to petrefy in the dripping water ,until they turned to stone.
A magician owns it now called Paul Daniels.

A little bit further afield is this -

This one's good too: Holy Wells of Bath and Bristol Region by Phil Quinn.

Getting back to holy wells; one of the best ways to find wells/ancient sites is to to read around the early celtic saints/desert monks. Over the weekend was tracing St.Trillo's skull and well and found a book by Elizabeth Rees (nun) Celtic Saints in their Landscape, she mentions several wells and prehistoric stones that are found in churchyards - "The stone in the icy corner"(its in the porch) in Corwen sounds appealing, she has also written "Celtic Sites and their saints". Another book, is Terry Breverton - "The book of Welsh Saints".
These early wandering monks would have sermonised from the old pagan stones, and probably sheltered as well..

Many thanks for all your replies! I didn't realise it'd generate so much interest.

I managed to get hold of a copy of 'Publications of the Thoresby Society, 16:1, 1973' - the librarian at the Thoresby Society was very helpful and had a copy ready within a couple of hours.

I will follow up the other links and books mentioned and get on my mountain bike and visit a few of these places.

Thanks again
