Julian Cope

Out of interest, are ther any members who were first attracted to this site because of Julian Cope/Teardrop Explodes. If so, has this led to an interest in prehistory?

Also, what is your fave Cope/Teardrop song?

Hi there,
Just got in from work and it's good to see someone else up. I intend to have a few ales now and talk rubbish for a while. I am just going to put on the best of CD and decide which is the best. I got into the teardrop explodes because of TMA, and remembering "world shut your mouth" which was a cracking hymn
Dave

I was very into Teardrop when I was a teenager, but didn't follow his career in music after they broke up.

Since I was a little girl I have always been drawn to ancient sites, though only the well-known ones because I didn't know others existed... you know, stuff round Avebury, Rollrights, White Horse - those in my immediate sphere - plus other ancient crumblies when out and about on my travels - Egypt, India, West Africa, etc...

I was reacquainted with Julian Cope as a 'stone head' in 1998, when I espied 'The Modern Antiquarian' on the shelves of the Henge shop at Avebury. Couldn't afford it, though. But then I found this website and lurked frequently on this site from shortly after it appeared.

I had no idea he was still making music and when i did find out I was bit afraid to dig any of it out in case I didn't like it. I didn't want to be disappointed, you see, having liked Teardrop so much. It wasn't until I met Moth on this website two years ago, who gave me a copy of 'Peggy Suicide', that I dared listen. Silly really, I should have realised how FABBIE it would be.

>>>'Also, what is your fave Cope/Teardrop song?'
The whole of 'Peggy Suicide'* Thoughtful, witty lyrics, pumping rhythms, soaring melodies... Mmmm, might play it right now....

(*except 'Pristeen', which I hate).

I was aware of the Teardrops when I was a young lad but actually got into The Cope when WORLD SHUT YOUR MOUTH (the single) came out and have been to see the archdrude on many occasions since, the last being at colchester arts centre last september. I already had a, lapsed, interest in stones and archaeology mainly stemming from an expedition I took across dartmoor in 1988, but The Modern Antiquarian definately rekindled this interest. I thought it was cool that Julian Cope was into the same stuff as me.

As for fave songs....I have to admit that I love REWARD from the Teardrops years and am a massive fan of the first two solo albums. It's difficult to choose one song, but I guess it's a toss-up between SUNSPOTS and ME SINGING. I also have a strange soft spot for HOBBY on Floored Genius 2 and I love ROBERT MITCHUM from Skelligton as both show the humorous side I've always enjoyed in your stage banter.

I grew up "next door" to Stonehenge and so pre history seeped into my brain from a young age. I also remember my parents (who were not ever hippies, just ordinary working class local people) taking me up to the free festival every year as toddler to hang out with "the Wallys"!... it became very important to me and lots of other people my age from Amesbury/Durrington etc. and I went every year till it was brutally surpressed!
As I got older my interest extended to other sites and to trying to work it all out but I never really thought other people were all that bothered.
I had been into Cope from my mid teens so I was really chuffed when I discovered that he was into this stuff and was doing a book. It's been great to see that so many people are interested and that they like cool rock and roll too!!

I got into the site for the stones 'n stuff, but I also liked Julian and the Teadrops back in the ' 80's! My fave is "Reynard the Fox", probably...

Me profile on here http://www.themodernantiquarian.com/user/506 sez this:

"Though I'd been interested in both for a long while, I finally got into stones & Cope relatively late in life and at around the same time (mid 90s). I guess my girlfriend at the time has to take the blame. She bought me 'Peggy Suicide' and she used to get those nice megalithic postcards from Mr Julian."

But actually, I think reading 'Head On' had a lot to do with it.... (Copewise rather than Stoneswise.)

Can't say i picked up on "Reward" first time round as I was trying my hardest to be a hippy at college at the time and was more into Yes, Floyd and Genesis. But by the early 80's my interest in music had broardened and I played both Kilimanjaro and Wilder to death. (I even bought the flying jacket !)

Followed Copey through the solo stuff, but I must admit I gave up on the Brain Doner stuff and still to hear Citizen cained.

Got more interested in stones and things through TMA although being in Cornwall they had always been lurking.

Best tracks ?

Reward, Tiny Children, Sunspots, all of Jerhoverkill.......

Whereas I couldn't giva a monkeys about the blokes music!

tma however, is what fanned a little flame about bumps in the ground and turned me into the obsessed individual I am today :)

I was independently interested in both before Julian got the bug. I used to visit the stones back in the early 80s whilst listening to Cope on my Walkman.

The two coming together was rather a nice happening for me.

yes indeed............interested but not obsessed

fave cope song today "world war pigs"

yesterday "sunspots"

the day before

"fear loves this place"

fave prehistoric viewpoint - castlerigg...oh so highly recommended

Who's Julian Cope?

Well I always though Julian was a bit you know... mad and it sorta fitted in well. I saw his one man show at the Edinburgh Fringe many years back when he appeared in a sort of jesters outfit and a wireless guitar and did a shit hot set from Skelington and old Teardrop stuff. I know at least one academic at Edinburgh University who was very impressed with the books and the research.
Fave tracks from Teardrop Tiny Children, every single track from the first album.
Solo stuff The Fried album was a classic as was Skelington.

Just replaced my LP of "Wilder" with the CD version. The extra tracks make it a very good £6.97 spent at Music Zone. Same with "Kilimanjaro" the other month at the same price.
