Hello Fellow Antiquarians,
I'll be making my first visit to England this March, accompanied by a friend of mine who went to school near Cornwall in the '70s. He and I only have one week to pack in as many visits as possible to ancient sites and pubs between London and Lands End. If you were in my shoes, what itinerary would you plan?

I presume you've got a copy of TMA? If not, buy one when you get here, get a good road map covering just S England, get a Bed and Breakfast every night perhaps 50miles further into your tour (you'll be out of season so plenty available), get off the main roads and get lost every day in a 20 or 30 mile radius and try all the local beers! Nearer the time, let us know and you might get a guided tour of our favourite sites :)

Hi Clint
My advice - get out of London fast (pick up a car at the airport?) and head west on the M4 towards Swindon. Track north at this point for a brief diversion to see the Uffington White Horse and Wayland's Smithy before heading back south to Avebury. There, that's day 1 sorted at least.
Day 2 - Spend time at Avebury (possibly spend two nights here), West kennett long barrow, Silbury Hill, Devil's Den etc. Get in car and head south to Stonehenge.
Day 3 - Continue along the M4 to Bristol - head south to see Stanton Drew. Drive further down M5 to Dartmoor to see Merrivale, (spectacular and if the weather's foul, you won't get lost on the moor), Scorhill stone circle and Shoveldown stone rows. Also see Greywethers and Fernworthy.
Days 4, 5, 6, 7 (in no particular order) In North Cornwall on Bodmin Moor, the must-sees are Trethevy Quoit and the Hurlers (there's so much round here!)
Must-sees in Land's End - Merry Maidens, the Pipers, Men-an-Tol, the Nine Maidens, Lanyon Quoit, Chun Quoit (these are all close together) and the ultimate in Moth's opinion is Boscawen-Un.
Fogous- yes, if you can do, get to Boleigh fogou (the property is up for sale right now and access may be difficult. If you can't get here, don't miss Carn Euny.

What do others think? What have I missed?!

Oh, and get a copy of TMA now!!!

All wonderful ideas -- please keep them coming!

Yes, I have a copy of The Modern Antiquarian, as well as an Aubrey Burl book a friend lent to me ("A Guide to the Stone Circles of Britain, Ireland and Brittany"). The former is the gold standard, of course, but the latter looks good too.

No, this isn't a once-in-a-lifetime trip. I imagine that it will be more of an annual jaunt until I finally make up my mind to immigrate.

To give you a bit more structure for your suggestions, let me tell you that I'm already booked for an evening at a friend's in Melksham on the penultimate night, and will be spending my final evening in London.

Thanks again,
Clint

"You can smoke in public places here."

But for how long? You can't in Ireland from 1st Jan onwards ...

My favouritest places in Cornwall are thus (in no particular order):

Boskawen-Un (stone circle)
Merry Maidens (stone circle)
Alsia Holy well
Sancreed Holy Well
Men-an-Tol/Men Scryfa/Nine Maidens (all very close to each other)

Off the top of me head, that's the best I can do! All are not too far from Lands End and are on these pages...

Have loads of fun... I wish I were there now - I love Cornwall, me!
