Spirit of Place

You have hit my nail so precisely with all that.
I can agree, I am not religious really, but I can appreciate Place.
Sites are more often than not in a good location, either through intent or just from the fact that they have been left alone to just be themselves.
I have real problems trying to Put Myself in Their Shoes.
It's a talent some just don't possess.
But it doesn't mean we can't appreciate things.

.o0O0o.

I appreciate stones and get that feeling that Nigelswift is describing, and coming at it from a very similar angle BUT I get the same feelings looking at York Cathedral, or Kings College, or the Tate Modern or some amazing new builds including that glass gherkin going up in London. I don't think, therefore, that my spirit of place aesthetic is linked to the nature/pre-lapsarian ideas.

"I have real problems trying to Put Myself in Their Shoes."

No one can put themselves "in their shoes"! It's impossible, just like only I can put myself "in my shoes". You can have a good go and get quite close, but you'll never manage it.

Some people just manage to "try" better than others, and in some cases to delude themselves that have actually succeeded.

This is not a comment on anyone on this forum in particular or generally, but a direct response to the one sentence above.
