GPS Hand Helds

General Query

I'm thinking of getting a GPS Handheld, possibly a Garmin eTrex Summit.

Does anyone here have any opinions suggestons about GPS Units or the Unit mentioned above, and their usefulness when linked to a PC.

Many thanks,

Ike

PPS I have not doctored this image. If anybody wants the version direct from the camera, just psot the request in this forum :-)

I have a Garmin eTrex (baby yellow one) which is excellent. I don't use mine with my PC so can't help you there.

The eTrex is quite popular among folks here, probably because it's quite cheap :-) However, it is good.

are now reckoned to be some form of electrical charge. It's a dull explanation but seems to fit the facts.

Now I need someone to explain what these B52's are - ok it's off topic - and how anyone can cycle for six hours without collapsing. The RAF use me as virtual target practise in the summer - it gets like we're workmates.

Those GPS boxes would be darn useful for recording finds unequivocally but my choice would rather be a minidisk player, and a good mike, to bring the field sounds back 'to my desktop'.

If you look at the silver ball pic in Photoshop and invert the colour, the ball sticks out like a sore thumb! A little sharpening reveals that its catching the light in the same way as the plane and is shadowed in accordance with the direction of the sun - its more than a ball lightening surely...

Yep, got the top of the range eTrex here. Invaluable when searching down sites. As to PC usage, the maps don't come cheap - I went for GPSMapMaster at http://www.gpsmapmaster.co.uk/ - takes a while to download the maps from MultiMap, one cell at a time, but does the job well. I've even set it up to monitor the GPS whilst driving and it showed my progress on the laptop screen!

I'd say you really do need the PC connection, if only to set up and download the waypoints to the GPS...

top bit of kit. goes nicely on the bike as well.

I'm another Garmin eTrex user. I haven't hooked mine up to a PC yet, mainly because the interface cable costs quite a bit. I only use the GPS when I have to, or if I have a relatively complex route planned between sites.

Here's the eTrex page off the Garmin Web site (you probably already know about this):

Well I can only add my support for the little yellow eTrex. I've had mine quite a while now and it's been a great help. Nice and cheap too! :)

Oh boys... and their toys...

I don't think I understood a word of this thar thread (he says chewing his straw)

In my day young un's just had pieces of string and rusty old nails to play with, and compasses on the end of hunting knifes.

Oh, where have all the hunting knifes gone??

I got my eTrex from these people:

http://www.gpsw.co.uk/

and they are very good.

At the time I considered buying from the States as the pound was so strong - the saving, even after 40-odd quid postage, was around fifty quid.

Cheers

I saw the very same objects as shown in your photo several years ago at an red arrows air display. In fact there were several of these objects that appeared to be very high altitude. I guess they're sending back data on whether conditions at altitude?
