You're right although I'm not sure it's probably any worse than in England. How many English prehistoric monuments could the average English person (the 100 people on Pointless, say) name? 6? 1?
Parts of Wales (mainly South) do undoubtedly suffer terribly from a lack of appreciation of surroundings generally, not just of heritage. Witness the fly tipping that we've both seen and that Carl reports regularly.
I hate rugby personally (a broken leg from being forced to play it didn't help endear me either).
