Approach from the inland side...all ancient, narrow, sunken roads. I did it on a dank day which added to it. Seeing those earthworks subsequently in sunshine in profile against the horizon truly brought home the magnificence of the place. Worthy of the personal attention of Holy Mc, I'd have thought. Maiden Castle's the glamourpuss, dug and dug, but Eggardon to me is the greater. Bets are off for it being the site of a Roman signal station - road traversing the base, see for miles from the top - but its history must go way further back. If anyone's looking for a big site with 'presence'.... and if I had the choice of a venue for a Mick Aston memorial TT dig..... having said that, it'd make it less of a secret. Anyway, do go.
