Yes I realise that Tom, it was what the sockets were dug into that interests me. For some reason I had always assumed they were set in soil but after seeing that photo of the ditch with that bedrock up to ground level the penny suddenly dropped. I wonder how many others didn't realised that before that ditch was cleaned out? What an undertaking, surely indicating the importance of the site itself!
