Take fifty people who know nowt round Avebury and record the "possible faces per stone" ratio they come up with then take them up to the Mother's Jam (and a hundred other sites, natural and artificial) and see if the ratio is significantly higher in Avebury.
I'd settle for (say) 5 individuals and just at Avebury and Mother's Jam. I know its nowhere near enough data to be scientifically sure, but I think it would provide some revealing data.
