Not quite sure what you mean by that Nigel. The fact that the 'figure' runs from north to south is purely coincidental surely, especially as TJM says it was built there because of the positioning of the Ridgeway Path, Swallowhead Springs and Winterborne stream which created its angulations. Looking at it like that, then the Winterbourne would have been mainly responsible for it N to S appearance don't you think.
