Hiya Barry matey,
Doesn't the 'Standing Stone and Roman' thing strike you as being odd? Apart from milestones the romans weren't really big on megaliths unless you count columns and ting.
Although there is no longer anything on the ground, there may be clues in the landscape to indicate antiquity.
If you look at the Cleveland dyke you will see a ridge that runs from Ayton Moor to the Tees at Barwick. At either end of this ridge are Neolithic & Bronze Age sites. We also know that the Tees was occupied from mesolithic times (Evidence found south of Thornaby, Ormesby, opposite Newport.
So we got a natural ridge linking sites with Viewly Hill bang on it. Does that suggest a trackway to you? Other evidence for occupation of the area is scant, Howe Hill at Newby, Greenhow Moor just outside Ayton.
Don't give up on this one Barry mate.
