Personally I find that 'externalising' emotions towards a site by leaving tat behind shows contempt for anyone except those who agree with leaving tat at ancient site, those who find it offensive/disrespectful can take a running jump I suppose. I can go there and, if I felt that way inclined, revel in an frenzy of fascist beliefs and xenophobia, get in my car and leave and no-one will be any the wiser. If I left my belief paraphenalia behind then following visitors would be well aware some fascist asshole had been through before them.

I've nothing against people scattering flowers, dolls, positive energy or whatever while they visit but I don't see where an argument can be drawn that they are entitled to leave their stuff behind when they leave.
