Actually I have absolutely no knowledge of anything prior to reading this ancient thread yesterday, so I have to make my assumptions based on what I read here. It all seems very plain to me. If it can be picked up, carried off and stashed away, it's being saved "for the nation". If it's too heavy to move then it should be protected "for the nation".

The big difference is that in the first case "the nation" won't get any benefit, or in many cases, even know about the 'sterling' work being done by someone who keeps their finds to themselves.

Some 'benefit', I'm sure you'll agree.

To use the smokescreen of protecting ancient monuments "for the nation" while preventing "the nation" from seeing anything dug up is, quite frankly, offensive and no real contribution to the argument at all.
