First thing would surely be to dig them up and see if the two halves join. Asking anyone over the age of 50 if they have any memories of them being moved, or any old stories told by their grandparents would help maybe. I take it the village has not suffered like many commuter villages where the populace is very recent and spends more time on the motorway than at home, and have no idea or interest in anything but the value of their property?
