There's an old sandstone-built cottage near to where I live that was once used as a schoolhouse. Part of the outside wall is covered in vertical scores, reputedly made by the children sharpen whatever it was they used to use to write on their slates.
I've seen fellas putting an edge on an iron pen-knife using a bit of snad or gritstone.
