I have witnessed phospherescence bright enough to read by on a number of occassions whilst at sea. The best I ever saw was off Senegal, it was late at night and a number of us were on deck enjoying our favourite brand of local cigarettes. All of a sudden the boat was surrounded by a bright electric blue light coming from the sea, it just came on as if someone had flipped a switch and it became as bright as day. The whole thing lasted for about 5 minutes and then ended as suddenly as it started.
