Stones found throughout the greater London area tend to be a flat Humbrol Matt Dark Red (Wealdstone) or an Airfix Matt Sand colour (London Stone, Cannon Street). Check out some of the churches in Buckinghamshire too where boshed up sacred stones were used to add texture to some crazy trend in building things called churches; all to do with some fad they call Christianity;
see Amersham & Chalfont St Giles chuches for example.
The museum at Neasden apparently managed to excavate some 'sarsens' from St Andrew's Church, Kingsbury back in the 70's and then lost them! Dohhh!
The Whetstone is still 'up the pub' and the Pinner stone resides in suburban angst to this day. Check out Itiner-thingamy by Stu Keley or someone sounding like this; apparently they had to remove the stones from runway 1 at Heathrow to allow these new fangled metal birds to land! Mounds are found on Stanmore Common too as are ... stones! Stanmore = Stoney Ground. Then catch the Sudbury Stone sipping Pimms at the Golf Club and the Hare Stone just by the Uxbridge Road/Harrow Weald.
Sacred wells abound here too ...
The London Stone ... the bit sat like a tv-dinner in mocrowave light opposite Cannon Street Station may (Dr John Dee suggested a wooden henge) have larger bits stuck under the station.
