This is one very impressive dolmen, located on the coast close to a small fishing village, huge contrast to the photos taken by ‘Jane’ just 12 years ago
A little like the best album you’ve never heard this was most certainly the most impressive cairn Id never heard of
Bit of a trek out to this alignment, however, a rewarding place to visit if in the area
Clearly originally part of a much bigger landscape, however, lots of uncertainty as to the original extent and shape of the various alignments
The beauty of this alignment lies within the individual stones rather than the general landscape
Better known as i’le de la Torche Passage grave, logged here as Beg an Dorchenn(?)
Looking down from the dolmen across the sheltered bay rich in shellfish
Hard not to believe the natural rock feature did not have some connection with the monument and its location on the cliff top
Beautiful setting at the end of a short peninsula overlooking the ocean
Very pleasant walk between the two cairns on a well defined path
Very much worth the effort of getting up here, you really do get a ‘top of the world’ experience
It took about 3 1/2 hours to walk up to the two cairns and back from the forest centre car park. There is a place to park much nearer the summit, however, having been in the van for 2 days I was looking to stretch my legs and opted for the walk up
Looking back up at the tomb, the partially covered mound provides a feel for what the site must have looked like when in use
Why wouldn’t you want to be laid to rest here, I didn’t want to leave and I’m yet to be called.
Easy access although the relatively narrow road made me wish I’d left my van on the main road, only a few yards away
Although close to other farm buildings this site retains its character and in a stunning location
The site is so closed in that it is difficult to photo the true beauty of this magnificent tomb
Not sure whether its right or wrong, regardless, visitors throw there rock onto the cap stone and make their wishes
The top stone is of course the star, delicately balanced and covered with visitors wishes
This portal tomb is very well looked after on the edge of the golf course. Good, well maintained footpaths from the hotel with clear signage making it easy to visit
I wasn’t really expecting this delight just a few yards from the dolmen, in the end found it the more interesting of the two sites although easy to see why the dolmen is the star with its huge capstone
