Wonderful artwork inside the cairn
Wonderful artwork inside the cairn
Possible alignment to distant Tor, however, why?
Lakehead Hill, easy access from car parks, short, pleasant walk through boggy wood to clearing. Multiple sites including cairn circles and stone row
Sittaford to Greywethers, onto Fernworthy Stone Circle and final stop at Assycombe Hill before back out onto moor for the walk back to Warrens House Inn. And what a lovely site to finish a day out on the moors at. Why build it on a hill? Ceremonially, would it have flowed up the hill or down the hill? What is the purpose of the end blocking stones? Why do we know so little?
Greywethers, with Fernworthy Forest in the background
Greywethers, approaching from Sittaford Tor. Looks like a gladiatorial arena down in the valley below
A couple of missing stones with Sittaford Tor in the background
Spot the stones! Monday was a perfect day for walking up to Sittaford from the Warren House Inn. Difficult terrain and the circle is hard to find without GPS coming from this direction, looks easy enough if approaching from Fernworthy Forest
As Er Grah was mentioned in a recent forum post thought I would post this rather poor photo showing the relationship between Er Grah (forefront and left), the Menhir Grande Brisee and the Table des Marchands. A very interesting site, unfortunately its a ‘pay for view’, however, its a nice place to freshen up and eat your lunch!
Once stood very close to the equally ‘giant’ Er Grah Cairn, assuming it didn’t break as they tried to erect it some 5000 years ago
Looking down into the single chamber.
This mighty Anta just coming into view, covered, for protection apparently, by the ugliest shed possible.
Pictures mask the size of this Grande Anta
Apologies, Anta seems to be wearing an hat (farm silo). Picture added to show large open front to the dolmen and how easy to add an extension and make into a building e a church)
The less visited of the 2 Antas. Although not evident on the photograph there was a rather large herd of cattle between me and the second Anta
Two Antas close together up a farm track (friendly on this occasion). This one was the most accessible.
Cant tell the wood, I mean stones, from the trees
Interesting stones used across the whole site
Another great place to relax and enjoy the winter sunshine
Looking back up the hill
Set deep among the cork trees with the sun filtering through this is a truly amazing place to relax and enjoy. Quiet, peaceful and no chance of being disturbed
Recycling the past. Once a burial tomb, still a place of worship
Getting ready for a full make over and restoration
Another orbit of the sun almost complete and time to plan for the next one. Happy Christmas to all who celebrate and equally happy Holiday to those who do not, as for me, well I’ve already started!
Sheep at Elva Plain, notice the farmer drives straight through the stone circle rather than going around. No real damage just such a lack of respect and stewardship for such an important site. Told me that no one visits, however, clear from reports that many do.
Kings Quoit and not the Devils Quoit as I described it in my blog, apologies
