Guess most people sometimes feel that the stones are trying to ‘tell you something’. Colmeallie ring couldn’t be more blatant here. Time to go. That-a-way.
The dun dominates the western extremity of Loch Awe. To be honest that is why I came...
The otherworldly ‘Table’ from Meall na Suiramach.
The Table... the perfect place to hide your livestock from marauding Vikings, observe fairy gatherings (if you dare).. or face up to a milk white cow? Incidentally, Dun Vallerain can be seen upper centre left...
Aerial view of Dun Vallerain from Meall na Suiramach
Only nearing journey’s end – we’ll, the outward leg, anyway – can the prize be seen.
From what I could see this is the only ‘reasonable’ direct route to the cairn... so presumably that used in antiquity? Note how the cairn, readily seen from the An Sithean chambered cairn, was placed so it cannot be seen on the approach.
[First of some additional archive images inspired by a visit to the ‘other Beinn na Caillich’ this year – sure, this cairn is far, far superior; despite that, I think this peak only just edges it in respect of views].
Beinn na Caillich from the ‘other’ Beinn na Caillich above Broadford.... The peak rises to the left of not-so-ugly-sister Sgurr na Coinnich.
With time fast running out following a very extended sojourn at the nearby broch I actually assumed this was the cairn (set a little behind viewpoint of last image) ... and, to be fair, that is exactly what it looks like. Thoughts?
Looking across Camalaig Bay late evening.... the exquisite siting of this wondrous broch is all too evident, sitting approx centre of the image upon the Fiadhairt Peninsular. Macleod’s Tables rise beyond. Thanks are due to Les for guiding me here.
Didn’t realise it at the time – and besides, it was gone 8:00 and out cold on my feet – but I reckon the ‘mound’, extreme centre right, is the cairn
Lovely spot for little effort.... unless, of course, one elects to follow the ridge to Macleod’s Tables.
Early morning, viewed near Loch Suardal (incidentally the parking spot for the wondrous Dun Fiadhairt)
