The full extent of a hillfort likened to an Iron Age “Millennium Stadium” has been uncovered by investigators.
Gaer Fawr hillfort at Guilsfield, near Welshpool, Powys, is effectively hidden by woodland, making it impossible to appreciate the scale of it.
Detailed survey by the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales produced a computer model of the site which dates from around 800BC.
Just spotted this link when idly scrolling through Kammer's TMA posts after reading his Stenness entry, and am intrigued by the Millenium Stadium comparison...looked at TMA entry and a bit surprised there's still no site visit by a TMAer, and only one pic, from distance, by Mr Postman. So: just a reminder that this place exists. Just look at that computer model..fek, it's, er, a bit big, innit! Woodland Trust owned, no access problems. The Woodland Trust site entry'd probably be a useful add to TMA, but I can't get it to load on my notsosmartphone (someone?). Anyway, if it's covered by deciduous woodland, a winter potter? Nudge, nudge..
We saw it from the distance when we were walking Offa's Dyke Path a few years ago (hence the photo); there are lots of hillforts in that area. It's on the long list.
Ah. Right so. (Take the pith helmet : ) )
