Took a walk around the woods on Offham Hill today.
One of the paths goes straight through the remains of the Neolithic Causwayed Enclosure, much of which was destroyed by a Victorian chalkpit.
To the south are two Bronze Age round-barrows, which are often found near such Neolithic sites in this neck of the woods.
The area is heavily overgrown, but there may be traces of the Enclosure banks on the narrow paths that pass through the space.
Having overlaid the archaeological image of the Enclosure over the OS map, this definitely bears more investigation.
It's a cool site, mysterious vibes. Without the tree cover the view would be spectacular over the Ouse valley.
I've seen an aerial shot where it was still open.
Could be an amazing site.
Oh cool is it possible to put the aerial shot on here? As you know doubt know, there are several mounds in Lewes - for example the castle one, most likely ancient, and the one by the football club which was dated mediaeval by recent investigation. Seems to me that there was a landscape of interlinked monuments in prehistory, later obscured by things like the priory, the castle and the quarry at Offham.
Strange you should say that. I was just about to 🙂
