Well done for this. I stomped the (hugely impressive) camp above three years ago, ran out of time so didn’t get to the rock shelters. Look like a ‘must visit’
I'm afraid it is a must visit... I re-visited the fort a couple of weeks back, took the wrong path out the car park and thus got hopelessly disorientated. 'Failure' like that bugs me, so tried again. Much better starting from the east. Hadn't appreciated how far the northern-most shelter really goes into the hillside. I am NOT a caver
Neither am I… I’ve got to admit this place reminds me of another very large site known to only a few, it seems. I’m disinclined to name it as I do not wish to attract the unprincipled who might wish to remove what might be in the over a dozen - so far - caves identified. There are tens of probable rock shelters too. I visited last year in search of a fort atop - map reading shite: epic fail - and went down into a large gorge which I can only liken to a Lost World.. fallen trees everywhere, ivy like llianas, 8’ Himalayan balsam. Found a few shelters, don’t want to upload pix because of what I have a strong hunch is a very sensitive and important ‘lurking’ site. No exaggeration, could put Creswell in the shade. And such a contrast to that place, which is now way over managed in my opinion. This site is as it was thousands of years ago. Minimal paths. My slippery explorations were curtailed by an encounter with the stream at the bottom. Exit Mr Soggy, cussing. I hope to return when the veg dies down a bit. Would still be very dubious about broadcasting it though.. gut says perhaps best left to ‘those in the know’ at least for now. I just stumbled upon it. Just goes to show what’s still out there to be evaluated, only a mile from ‘civilisation’. Anyroad, Oldbury: if you like that you’d love this other one. Sorry to tease, wish I could elaborate. Well done for continuing to do what you do.
