Teufelsbackofen (Devil’s Oven)
Dolmen, Cup Mark Stone and Giant’s Bed

In this clearing there are two megalithic tombs of different types. One is a massive, extended dolmen surrounded by a stone circle, and the other is a long Giant’s Bed (Hünenbett) with a ‘small stone chamber’.

In earlier centuries, people could think of no other explanation for the construction of these burial sites than that they were the work of giants (Hünen).

It seemed inconceivable that these tombs could have been built by humans using only the most basic technical tools.

Numerous legends surround the ‘giant’s tombs’, which also explains the name ‘giant’s oven’ or ‘devil’s oven’. Apparently, it was believed that the extended dolmen was a kind of oven.

One of the dolmen’s capstones is covered with numerous small indentations (little bowls). Ethnographic traditions suggest it is likely that healing rock powder was extracted here.
