Understood… a year ago I could climb to the top of Ardnamurchan Point lighthouse non stop, this year less arduous hill ascents have lead to ‘pauses to admire the view’. Am still managing fieldwalking every weekend at the moment, just the less testing stuff. I’ve still not climbed a single Munro, sadly. Just one would be good. I’m 69 dontyouknow.
Well, seems to me the walking fraternity gets consumed by statistics, missing out on untold great stuff... ultimately, it's the views, the sense of place... or whatever you want to call it... and the effort it takes YOU to get there - that gets me.
Agreed… I know my effort reservoir isn’t what it was when I started field walking in earnest ten years ago. I’m currently exploring the moors NW of Sheffield, revisiting and seeing what I missed. The really good stuff is almost two hour yomp from the nearest tarmac, same as the part of Colonsay that I’ll be having another session on next year, touch wood. Quite far enough, six hour stints. Hope I feel up to it. But yes, what ‘spirits of place’, good - and maybe not… my other half picked up on vibe while we were out recently and couldn’t get out of the ‘secret valley’ where we were fast enough. Which site or area has the most ‘atmosphere’ for you?
I can get to the top, I will get to the top :-)
Yeah - I'd rate this a classic "Mid-walian" peak... a mere hill. But it took as much effort as a munro. Maybe I'm just too old now.
