I found this immediately to the west, alongside the cairn – which is of an unusually large size. I believe this to be the true lookout point which affords shelter, unlike the exposed to the elements top of that cairn, whose Gaelic translation is ‘pile of stones watch point’. A watch point for where? Reckon I have found the answer to that downslope when fieldwalking. As of date of publication of this image fieldnotes and images are yet to be uploaded but local official bodies have already been informed. Perhaps I’ve found hidden in the vegetation the most important prehistoric site on the island… we’ll see…

That's cool. Finding and highlighting previously unrecorded stuff is surely one of TMA's primary aims...
Agreed absolutely. Soon after I started stoning seriously I started to come across bits and bobs and this developed into a passion for fieldwalking - a bit of a niche hobby perhaps. I’m just naturally curious, wanting to find out where the people who made these cairns, stones and duns etc lived. Like as not it was nearby or at least with sight, where topography permitted and there was access to water. There’s loads to find, in plain sight or hidden in the rough stuff. In a way it bugs me that people go to a prehistoric site, tick it off and go on to the next one without taking the time to look left or right.
I’ve found loads of stuff in the last ten years or so, some not reported, some later than the TMA parameters, some sites of quite large size. I’m aware of my clock ticking and have decided not to sit on things. If I get egg on my face so be it - at least I’ve tried.
I’ve found some great stuff on Colonsay as well as Gigha…. one hell of a ten days. Up on TMA soon. Back to Gwynedd soon: who knows, maybe more. I just wish more people did likewise. Change the map.
Yeah. 'Niche' is good. With 'AI' suddenly flavour of the month - with apologies to Mr Smith - everybody's now jumping everybody else's train and looking/sounding exactly the same. It is just so tedious and boring, same as when Cope made such an impact back in '98 with his idiosyncratic take. Keep it up, sir.
Trying my best. You too :-)
