What were the roads like? I've been longing and to get back for the first time in seven years at end of Aug but have recently learnt of the NC500 route and the adverse affect it has apparently had ...it's been so tranquil up there previously, not sure I want to go now. Fab pic tho : )
I'm probably not the best person to comment as I hate driving. We always travel early, so most days started about 7.00am. Way before the B&Bers and Campervans get moving. 10.00am might be a different story. I tend to stay in one place for a number of days and don't drive much whilst there. Driving early or late in the day is the key. We drove Durness to Altnaharra, about 42 miles, last Wednesday. Started before 9.00am and didn't overtake anyone and only had about 4 cars overtake us, very quiet. The single track road round Durness can get a bit busy if you hit it at the wrong time.
Don't be put off by the coverage the NC500 gets. The roads weren't that busy. Compared to the Lake District or Cornwall in the summer months, it's dead.
Megalithic site-wise you won't see a soul. It's bliss. Even the hills are quiet apart from the main ones.
Thanks for that...on my last three visits I had young daughters with me and stoning didn't get much of a lookin. Will be in our campervan but don't want to behave like some of the others, or indeed be anywhere near them.
