The Lost Wheelhouses of Uist – a guide to some of the excavated wheelhouses of North & South Uist
This is a fascinating link, thank you for posting it. The summary says wheelhouses are only found in the Western Isles and Shetland (possible also the coastal areas of Caithness). How very interesting - I have visited Jarlshof on Shetland which is unique inasmuch its use spans approximately 4000 years.
Hi tjj. It's a good guide and really makes me want to visit the Uists again. Particularly this site at Grimsay which looks fantastic. I've been lucky to visit Jarlshof too. The time span of the buildings there made my head spin a little. One of my favourite places I think. Odd that these wheelhouses are only found in a few areas. Why Shetland but not Orkney for instance? I do struggle with the differences between wheelhouses, aisled roundhouses and wags.
