The story says 'Rodents'. Voles, in fact. Doesn't mention rats.

Back when I lived in the country, I used to think the fat juicy voles the cats brought in would have gone down a treat with a bit of seasoning and some bbqing.

Rodents have always been a part of the human diet. Elvis was fond of a nice bit of Squirrel and the odd slab of Possum too. I'm not sure if he liked a mouthful of Beaver, but it's a poshability.
