From the Press and Journal website (19 October 2012):
A mothballed prehistory park in Aberdeenshire is now available for let – which could finally clear the way for it to be put up for sale.
Archaeolink at Oyne closed last year after the local authority withdrew all funding for the venture long labelled a “white elephant” by critics.
Negotiations between Aberdeenshire Council and the Archaeolink Trust had been continuing over the possibility of reviving the site, but earlier this year the now-dissolved trust transferred its lease of the site back to the council.
It's a good thing but in the wrong place.
Absolutely agree drewbhoy! I remember carting a whole load of YAC kids up from South Lanarkshire on a visit for the day years back. Nearly seven hours of travelling! They had a great day out at the place, great swordfights, re-enactments etc. (and a grand run aroon Tealing "Earthoose" on the way back down) but it was a very long haul from anywhere near the Central Belt or abies the Great Glen. It wiz even a bit of a hurl frae Aiberdeen. And pretty inaccessible from the West Coast really.
Not that everything needs to be on a city's doorstep but for a bespoke historic/ museum/ archaeo centre... naebuddy could really access it verra easy! Yeh ken... schools and the like!
Say, Loie and I visited Archaeolink on our first Driving the Stone Age trip, in 1999. It was open but not completed. Have had no idea it was doing poorly. We enjoyed it.
