RIP Lord Avebury

'Stonehenge and Avebury WHS Friends' have just made the following announcement: I'm putting it here as TMA was where I first learnt of the great stature of Lord Avebury - and also to give others the chance to pay their respects if they want to.

"Avebury and Silbury Hill lost a very special friend today - RIP Lord Eric Avebury, 4th Baron Avebury 29 September 1928 - 14 February 2016. Eric was tremendously proud of his connection with Avebury and especially Silbury Hill, which was owned by him and his forbears before him for over a century. He fought very had to protect Silbury when the CRoW Act threatened in 2000 and won his appeal, which was a case which should have been fought by English Heritage but was 'overlooked' by them...! Eric was also of course a tireless campaigner on behalf of human rights and the longest serving Lib-Dem in the House of Lords. He had been ill for over a year, bravely made arrangements for his resting place and spoke out on assisted dying. A brave, honest and thoroughly decent human being."

A life well lived.
