I didn't read all the links - did they destroy the mound?

No.

The mound is still there and is still the same distance from the A75 as it always has been. It was always assumed to be a Norman Motte and Canmore still identifies it as such. I assume they will be updating their site...

Dunragit/ Glenluce were an amazing focal point in Prehistory and into the Roman Period. The area between The Water of Luce and the Piltanton Burn is an amazingly rich area archaeologically.

The Romans had a major base at Glenluce. The A75 pretty much follows the Roman road heading to Stranraer (Rerigonium on Ptolemy's map) and the big natural harbour of Loch Ryan (Rerigonius Sinus) only a few miles to the West. The Dunragit = Rheged Dark Age connection is often quoted.

For such a place so busy in Prehistory and into the early Historical Period it is very quiet now. Only disturbed by the regular rumble of Ferry Traffic Artics and passing tractors.
