No, you really, really don't. You can walk for hours across many miles of upland Mid- and South Wales without seeing a car or often any other people, starting from one bus stop and walking to another (or back). I can give you the links to the bus times if you'd like to try it, by way of research? :)

I can guarantee you that from where I live, with the time available to me, it's simply not possible via public transport.
