So let's start there. If the amount of urban car use was significantly reduced, the amount of car use left, consisting of long journeys, rural necessity and LS pottering around the byways would be a fraction of what it now is. Which would be good, wouldn't it?

Sorry, this has strayed waaaay off topic now!

Don’t worry about straying way off topic - that’s a well-respected TMA institution :-) I do take exception to the allegation of ‘pottering around the byways’ however ;-)

moss and I head (by car) for the remoter places as much as possible - places where we know there are things of stony interest. Getting to some of those places on foot would take us a day or two from the nearest bus stop so doing it that way is a complete no-no. The result is that we can maximize our time in any given area. We’re not rushing around, nor are we pottering, just getting to the places we want to get to with the minimum of fuss and the maximum use of our resources.

OK, happy to re-word as "LS driving within the confines of the speed limit in a purposeful way around the byways". Better?

:)
