Also we can't blame EH for wanting a cash cow. CallMeDave has just cut them loose from State support with a one-off payment of £80m to look after 400 major heritage sites forever.
Take that as an opportunity to get involved in the preservation of our local sites personally like I have. Become a Monitor and offer to visit sites and report on their condition and further offer to do unpaid remedial work such as clearing the site of undergrowth and keeping the stones from being lost from sight. If we don't then this shortage of funding is going to cost us our heritage. Not everything is about money. I've just been given the go-ahead to re-expose and clean off the top surface of the fallen stones in a circle that are lying hidden well beneath the turf, something that would never have been granted before to an amateur, everything having to be above ground level. I have become trusted and offered my services for free. Now is our chance to get hands on!
