Ha...just the Early Neanderthals who lived during the last Glacial Period (Wiki)lived for 100,000 years, how much longer do they need to prove themselves and only became extinct because of either climate change or interaction with humans (Wiki again!). Nothing lasts forever!
Meat didn't last forever either,so unless it was killed and eaten on the hoof then smaller animals could easily have been rounded up to eat as and when. It wasn't just the large animals that's for sure.
