Are you sure about that Mr t? I dunno – the further downstream you go from the Swallowhead the less vantage points surely. But I really don’t know – we’d have to get a cartographer or someone with the right expertise to verify that. The fact remains, however, that Silbury really does seem to be sited at a place that gives it the optimum visibility from the most available vantage points – a fact, surely, that suggests that was part of its builders’ original intent.


It's more difficult to calculate the sun roll .We have to take the situation as it is and being seen from WKLB and having much the same height and being blocked by Waden Hill are clearly important factors .Waden Hill blocks about 25 % (90 degrees ) of the horizon . Being sited lower down in the valley would get rid of that percentage but the WKLB view would be lost but that would not be the case if sited at the palisaded enclosures . The hidden aspect is as likely to have been important , so often barrows , rock art , stone circles appear to be sited not on but just away from the greatest viewshed as if the it's the view from rather than to that counts .
