This rang a big bell with me: "may never have been "fixed" to the surface in a way that would leave an archaeological record".... So what are we to make of Stukeley, called a liar for centuries for drawing the Beckhampton Ave so long, proved not a liar over six stones, but no record yet found of the others. Was he drawing relatively small stones placed on the surface that left no marks when removed?

On the line that Stukeley drew running to the south west after leaving the Beckhampton Cove the Vatcher's recorded a buried sarsen at the side of the Calne road in the early 70's (Pollard/Reynolds 2002)

PS. Just looked up the Vatcher report and it says the sarsen was discovered in 1967 during the excavation of a trench alongside the A4 road at Beckhampton exactly where S had estimated the avenues alignment.
