"What about the Avenues, could they not have initially been in timber?"

I haven't heard of any evidence for that having been unearthed but it would be fun if it turned out to be true.

I've always wondered if parts of the Avenues were fairly modest surface-placed stones, hence the lack of modern evidence for their existence.

Good point Nigel. Thinking aloud now, I suppose if a wooden post was directly replaced by a much larger stone, then the evidence for its existence would disappear (unless it was a very shallow stone hole that is). Now I'll have to check this out but I think I'm right in saying that in her 'Avebury' book, archo Caroline Malone mentions something about the possibilty of timber being used prior to the stones other than at the Sanctuary. I'll come back to this when I find it.
