we saw the moon over midmar a couple of years back at summer solstice but became convinced the recumbent could be a siting level for it - the angle of the hills in the valley wouldn't allow it



Yes Midmar has no lunar alignment .As you probably know RSCs tend to be associated with lunar orientations rather than solar so best bet is probably Hatton of Ardoyne for solstice sunset I'll double check and let you know if it's not .


The sun should set from the centre of the circle on the winter solstice right over Broclach Hill , an insignificant bit of moorland at NJ 62160 22730 . You can see it on one of Moth's pics the fhighest point of the flat area to the west of the two more obvious lumps of Hermits Seat and Black Hill .
From the centre , if you can guess where that is , it that should be to the right of centre of the recumbent . Unless Fred Coles's northing is accurate , which I doubt , in which case it would be to the right of the recumbent .
