"Seem to remember John North proposing a procession up the Stonehenge Avenue would be able to keep the setting sun framed between the lintel of the central trilithon and the lintels of the outer ring for minutes."
That's pretty compelling Bucky as a "moving" alignment is more likely to be deliberate than a mere static one - especially if the viewing point isn't just a random point of many points that you choose merely because that's where it happens to work. In this case the viewing point is a viewing corridor and you don't walk along it merely because it's the corridor where it works but because it's clearly marked out as an avenue.
One small criticism of our neolithic chums though. Since the setting winter solstice sun moves laterally as well as vertically, you might have expected them to offset the Avenue slightly, so as to extend the viewing time before the sun went behind an upright. But then, maybe they laid out a diagonal avenue within the avenue so as to achieve this? You and I would and I, for one, am not brighter than them. ;)
